Baghdatis is an immensely talented player who couldn't reach his maximum potential due to the constant fitness issues that he had faced throughout his career. The Cypriot has retired more than ten times since 2015 with the recent retirement coming in the finals at ATP Chengdu against Istomin (October 2017).
Currently ranked at #123, Baghdatis reached as high as #8 in the ATP Rankings when he made the finals at Australian Open 2006, defeating the likes of Roddick, Stepanek, Ljubicic, and Nalbandian, before losing to Federer in the Finals (after winning the first-set 7-5).
A fully fit Baghdatis can adapt and produce results on any surface, expect Clay, where he has a minus W/L ratio (56/61). He has won more than 100 matches (114/68) and four titles on Indoor hard-courts (Two ATP Tour and Two Challenger).
32-year-old Baghdatis has made a good start to the season winning three consecutive matches before losing to Rublev in four-sets at the Australian Open (R2). He will look to carry on the momentum when he makes his ATP Sofia debut on Wednesday.
Kazakhstan's Davis Cup hero, Kukushkin, will be making his debut in this event against Baghdatis. He opted to play at the San Francisco Challenger this time last year, where he lost his second-round match to Mmoh in straight-sets.
Kukushkin has made an ordinary start to the season. He reached the quarter-finals at ATP Pune, then faced two consecutive first-round exits, including retirement at Canberra Challenger. The win against Adrian Bodmer last Friday in the Davis Cup was a much need victory for the World #73.
Baghdatis won their only meeting when they faced in the finals at Aptos challenger in 2014 (7-6 6-4). Like Baghdatis, Kukushkin can adapt to any surface (except Grass), and he will make this a tough first-round test for Baghdatis.
